Specialty Tube Solutions of Mio, MI manufactures prototypes and produces tubular products and fluid handling systems. As a newer start-up business, they needed a low overhead way to find new talent and train them to do the work needed. They also needed guidance on growing their small business.

As Specialty Tube Solutions began to grow, they needed to hire at a pace to keep up with the new work. In April 2015, Robby & Courtney Sears, Specialty Tube Solutions owners, came to Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium (MW!) and sought the assistance of Business Solutions Professional (BSP), Julie Creps, and Small Business Development Consultant, Bruce Goldammer.

BSP Julie Creps helped Specialty Tube Solutions by posting position openings, collecting resumes, and qualifying candidates. From these efforts, two individuals, Dawn MacLellan and Edward Flint, were hired and trained. Michigan Works! was also able to provide safety glasses, welding gear, and boots for the new hires.

Bruce Goldammer, SBDC consultant, counseled the Sears’ on attracting new business and dealing with overseas contracts.

With Julie and Bruce’s assistance, Specialty Tube Solutions quadrupled their bottom line last quarter! The strong growth has allowed for the advancement of current employees and the business skills presented by Bruce have allowed the owners to focus on prototype development and generation of competitive bids.

Due to the available training funds, Specialty Tube Solutions was able to grow their business and increase productivity, presenting new challenges such as maintaining quality control. Owners Robby and Courtney are confident that with the assistance and training they obtained with the help of MW! and SBDC, their success and growth will continue. In fact, next business quarter they hope to fill 6 additional positions, with the help of their Michigan Works! BSP.
