Straits Area Federal Credit Union Commits to Making Northern Michigan More Prosperous

For over 60 years, the Straits Area Federal Credit Union has been committed to making our corner of northern Michigan more prosperous. Originally formed to serve the underserved, SAFCU’s purpose is to serve members by saving them money and assisting with all of their daily financial needs.

In the last 5 years, SAFCU has grown over 30%, going from 22 to 32 employees. In September 2015, they moved into their brand new building, which took a year to complete. The process took about 5 years total. Today, SAFCU has developed new lending products and are keeping up with technology to better serve their members. With all of this growth, SAFCU turned to Michigan Works! for hiring assistance.

Cindy Harrison, Straits Area Federal Credit Union CEO, says the knowledge and services provided by Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium is amazing. She states, “After going through the entire hiring process with MW’s assistance, they have made the method of hiring much easier. We feel the Cheboygan MW! office has been an incredible resource for us. They hosted a Career Fair just for SAFCU, allowed us to use office space for interviewing, posted our job orders on PMTC, collected resumes and referred qualified candidates. It was a huge success!”

Michigan Works also coordinated a SAFCU Talent Tour with Cheboygan high school students in the Construction Trades program. In conjunction with Devere Construction, we were able to give a tour of the SAFCU/Devere construction project last summer and the students were able to see first-hand what was involved in this project.

Straits Area Federal Credit Union is made up of people who care deeply about the communities of Cheboygan County and who work hard to make a better future for everyone a reality. SAFCU has participated in and sponsored community events such as Walk for Warmth, Relay for Life, Lioness, Jaycees, Daughter’s of Isabella, and scholarship programs. SAFCU’s business could have taken a hit during the construction project, but with the incredible support from the community and Michigan Works!, they’re able to be recognized as an employer that has made a great impact on our community.
