Growing Credit Union Gets Assistance with Employment Services
For nearly 65 years, the Straits Area Federal Credit Union (SAFCU) has been committed to making northern Michigan more prosperous. With three northern Michigan locations (Cheboygan, Indian River, and Mackinaw City), they care deeply about the communities of Cheboygan County and work hard to make a better future for everyone a reality. SAFCU’s purpose is to serve their members by saving them money and serving their every day financial needs. SAFCU recently hired two full-time service representatives for their three locations and due to rapid growth they were in need of even more staff. Since they are currently in the process of constructing a new building, they unfortunately didn’t have the space to conduct interviews.
Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium helped promote the job openings through advertisements and helped coordinate a job fair at their office. MW! also provided their computer lab and conference room to SAFCU for two days.
Approximately 30 people showed up for the job fair and another 30-40 mailed their application directly. With all of the applications in hand, SAFCU narrowed it down and conducted second interviews at the Michigan Works! Cheboygan location. From the career fair, SAFCU was able to hire 2 full-time Full Service Representatives, bringing them to 27 full-time employees and 1 part-time employee.
“When we first contacted Niki Chamberlain at the Michigan Works! office, we were not aware of the services provided, such as the available space and help with advertising. We would definitely use them as a resource again,” said Cindy Harrison, Straits Area Federal Credit Union CEO.
