Job Seeker on PATH to Self-Sufficiency

When Shanna came to Michigan Works! she was about to lose her rental home. She was in desperate need of a job and a less expensive place to live. Shanna had no friend or family in the area – just her and her son. She had no work history and had only worked a volunteer position previously. To compound her problems, she had no driver’s license, which made her situation even more challenging.

Michigan Works! helped to set Shanna up with public transportation for her job search, her job preparedness workshops, and to take her son to child care. Via the P.A.T.H. program, Michigan Works! was able to pay for Shanna’s driver’s permit and driver’s education classes, and she was given a voucher for interview clothing, while transportation assistance was provided thanks to the Otsego Community Fund.

Shanna took her job preparedness classes very seriously and appreciated the multiple job referrals offered by Michigan Works! Eventually, Shanna was hired by Bob Evans as a hostess. She has worked there for a while now, moving to the kitchen doing kitchen prep, and now training to be a server. In addition, she has saved up her money and applied to low income apartments. She is happy to be living more comfortably with her son in a place she can afford.

Shanna is very grateful for the assistance she was offered from Michigan Works! thanks to the P.A.T.H. Program and the Otsego Community Fund, stating, “ Michigan Works! has been a key partner in helping me get off cash assistance. I would have had a challenge securing and keeping employment if it wasn’t for the bus and taxi help that I received.”
