PATH Program Helps New Alpena Resident Conquer Many Challenges

When Heather Allsopp relocated from Flint to Alpena, MI, she found herself unemployed and lacking the necessary experience and job search skills. She wasn’t familiar with the area, had lapsed on her auto insurance, and had no means of childcare. She also didn’t have appropriate clothing for employment. She didn’t know where to start. That’s when she was referred to Michigan Works!

Via the PATH Program, Case Manager Michelle Burns helped Heather secure auto insurance and get assistance with mileage reimbursement for her job search. Heather was also provided resources for childcare and assistance with appropriate work clothing. Heather attended job search workshops at Michigan Works! and Talent Specialist Mary Davis helped Heather with her resume and cover letters.

Heather also faced the challenge of new technology. She did not know how to work her new phone, so she wasn’t receiving messages left by potential employers. She quickly learned to always read the instruction manual for new devices!

Once Heather had available transportation and childcare, she was able to secure part-time employment with the Senior Center of Alpena. Weeks later, with the experience gained from the Senior Center, Heather was able to obtain a full-time position at Tendercare of Alpena with a 17% increase in pay. She now has adequate uniforms for work and appropriate clothing as well. Heather continues to work full-time and is gaining relevant experience at her new position that will benefit her in the future.
