United Way Grant Helps Job Seeker Start New Career

Samantha Stinson

Samantha Stinson came to Michigan Works! wanting to better her situation with a full-time job. She had recently moved to the Alpena area and was trying to get her life in order. She wanted to advance her education and work in the health field.

She got a job with Medilodge of Alpena, but needed scrubs and work shoes for her new positions, which she couldn’t afford on her own. She sought assistance from Michigan Works!, but unfortunately she didn’t qualify for WIOA Funded programs, due to wage calculations. Fortunately, thanks to a grant received from the United Way of Northeast Michigan, Michigan Works! was able to help Samantha get the work scrubs and work shoes she needed.

Samantha is now working at Medilodge of Alpena and starting CNA classes. Once completed, Medilodge will assist with funds for her to receive her LPN and RN. Thanks to this initial assistance needed to get her foot in the door, Samantha is looking forward to a productive career in health care.
