As perfect pre-graduation preparation, 40 Onaway high school seniors recently practiced job interviews and had their resumes critiqued during this year’s Mock Interview Day at Onaway High School.

Twenty area professionals volunteered their time to conduct the interviews and offer guidance, including many former OHS teachers. Each student met with three different employers to interview for a variety of positions. The employers critiqued their resumes and filled out feedback forms on how each student handled themselves in the interview. This information was to be shared with the students later in class.

Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium, one of the mock-interviewers, also held an informational workshop with the students the week prior. The workshop focused on career fair preparation, including appropriate interview attire, interview etiquette, what to bring to an interview and more.

“I really liked the feedback I was given from some interviewers during the mock interview. It was very helpful to hear Instead of saying this…, try wording it like this…” said one student participant.

“It was great to see this group of young people so prepared! All were very receptive to suggestions and excited to participate. I really wish more schools took the initiative to prepare their students to be job seekers. It’s really one of the first things they’re going to face out of school or over summer break,” commented Alicia Wallace, Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium’s Marketing & PR Coordinator.
