Sherry S., a single mother of three children, had just relocated to Alpena from Grand Rapids when she was referred to Michigan Works! from DHHS. At Michigan Works!, Career Advisor Michelle Burns worked with Sherry, referring housing assistance, networking to obtain childcare, referring for childcare assistance, as well as assisting with her resume and cover letter. In addition, Michelle helped Sherry get set up with public transportation, since she didn’t have a vehicle.

With the help Sherry received from Michigan Works!, she was able to secure transportation, childcare and housing assistance, and also land employment with GPS Hospitality as PT Crew. Impressed with her work, GPS wanted to promote Sherry to management once she secured her own transportation. Once again, Michigan Works! was able to assist, stepping in to provide a one-time auto purchase for Sherry.  Sherry has now been promoted to manager and she’s doing great!

“I moved back from Grand Rapids and was homeless and referred to Michigan Works! Because they were able to help with bus fair, I was able to find a job and was offered to be promoted to manager within 2 days of work…but I needed to have a vehicle,” says Sherry. “Michigan Works! also helped with that. I am very thankful for all the help. All I want to say is, as long as you do your part of what they ask, they will help you!”
