Training Grant Keeps Tech Business on the “Cutting Edge”

Cutting Edge Computers of Gaylord offers in-house IT solutions from PC sales, repair, and network deployment to cloud computing back-up solutions. A family owned business, Cutting Edge has been serving Gaylord area since 2006. Owner Mike Willits started by supporting several local businesses out of his home. As his client list grew, he decided it was time to give the customers a store. In October of 2014 the doors officially opened and ever since, Cutting Edge’s business has grown at a relatively strong pace. To continue to serve their clientele with the best service possible, Cutting Edge must continue to be on the “cutting edge” of an ever changing technology.

Technology changes at a rapid rate and keeping up with the newest software and hardware advances requires continued training and education for Cutting Edge staff. It is very important to receive the training to also remain in compliant with the products Cutting Edge sells and services. Unfortunately, it is difficult in northern Michigan to find employees with the skill set that is required to work with this type of business, so Cutting Edge often has to provide staff with the necessary training. To provide the needed training to keep staff up to date on an ever changing product, Cutting Edge worked with Michigan Works! to apply for a Skilled Trades Training Fund grant.

Cutting Edge was awarded $2,051 to train three of their administrative staff. North Central Michigan College provided the training which would help the staff to be more skilled and efficient in the business. As a result of the training, Cutting Edge staff will be more efficient handling customers and can provide top line service to an ever changing product.

Office Manager Courtney Willits reports, “STTF benefited my employees by helping them better understand their job, thus serving our customers better.”

Trainee Cindy Keefe, an Office Assistant, said, “I am very grateful for taking these classes. They have helped me do my job more efficiently.”

In the near future, Cutting Edge plans to relocate to a larger building and add more staff. They report that Michigan Works! will be their first choice to help them with their employment needs and they will apply for future STTF grants to continue to keep their staff on the “cutting edge.”
