Panel Processing was awarded $33,520 thanks to the 2016 Skilled Trades Training Fund (STTF) program. They utilized the funds to train 37 workers across three of their locations (Alpena, Holland, and Coldwater). In addition, Panel Processing used On-the-Job training funds to hire and train three new workers at their Holland site.

Michigan Works! coordinated the award application and enlisted Stiles University in Grand Rapids to provide CNC training for employees from the three Panel Processing locations. Certificates were issued to all staff upon completion.

The STTF grant funding allowed Panel Processing (Alpena) to bring in an OEM certified machinery trainer to explore various aspects and options of the latest version of software on CNC machines, as well as to help improve production methods. It also allowed multiple operators from various shifts to sit down together to discuss the challenges and opportunities that they face on a daily basis, and to have a machinery expert available to bounce ideas off of.

After the training, Panel Processing’s CNC operators were more competent in doing their daily tasks, and the improvements showed up immediately in both part quality and production.

Justin Wilding, Machine Operator from the Alpena said, “This training allowed me to learn how to write macros, program peck drilling, and to use other options in the software that I normally don’t get exposure to on a regular basis.”

The STTF grant resulting in additional CNC training has been extremely beneficial to Panel Processing. Thanks to this training, staff will be able to write and edit programs faster and more accurately, giving the company a competitive edge and increasing productivity.

The Skilled Trades Training Fund has been very beneficial to this northern Michigan manufacturing company and Panel Processing expects further growth over the next few years. In the future, they hope to work with Michigan Works! to secure additional STTF awards to continue increasing the skills of their staff and stay competitive in the marketplace.
