A Fresh Start Leads to Self-Sufficiency

Losing your job unexpectedly is a very negative experience, but as Jessica Pierce attests, “Michigan Works! gave me a better outlook.”

Jessica, a single parent who lost her job with a local, skilled nursing facility, knew she needed help to make a fresh start. Not willing to give up, she applied for cash assistance through DHS to help make ends meet for her family. DHS referred her to Cheboygan Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium for help with her job search.

At Michigan Works!  Jessica engaged during orientation and the AEP process, proving to be an incredibly motivated person. She participated and cooperated in every aspect: attending class, preparing her resume and cover letter, and utilizing MW!NC resources to improve her job search skills.

She was provided the support needed to gain confidence while seeking employment with case management through the PATH Program including mileage assistance and interview clothing. Her newly updated resume was mailed and applications were filled out, as she did what determined people do to find work.

Jessica didn’t have to wait long for an interview and was hired quickly! She works more hours now at an assisted living/retirement community making more than before. She loves her new job saying, “I love working here. I love working with the elderly. I love this environment. My co-workers are so friendly and it doesn’t even feel like work here.”

As of the last update, Jessica passed her CENA exam, which will increase her opportunities and future wages. She not only found employment that she enjoys. but is closer to home so her commute time and expenses have decreased and she no longer needs assistance. Best of all, her new schedule allows her to work full-time and allows for more time with her children!
