Long-Term Unemployed Finds New Career Thanks to Michigan Works!
Laura Cramer came to Michigan Works! in March of 2014 seeking job search assistance. Her last job had been over 4 years earlier, which was a minimum wage position at the local grocery store. Lacking a work history and confidence, Laura was unsure how to begin her job search.
At Michigan Works!, Laura worked with Talent Specialist Barb Timm to update her resume, learn how to job search and enter the talent pool. Laura attended job fair prep classes, as well as the Michigan Works! Career Fair in Alpena in April. As a result of the Career Fair, in July of 2014, Laura was hired into an on-the-job training program at Allband Communications and she has been employed there ever since! From unemployed and expecting minimum wage, with the help of Barb Timm, Laura was able to secure an administrative assistant position making $15/hr. Laura is happy to report she is receiving quarterly bonuses as well!
Laura recently sent Barb a letter of appreciation which reads:
I really appreciate all of the help received through the Michigan Works Office. Re-entering the workforce after four years was made much easier for me. I hadn’t been employed for quite some time because of my family situation and Michigan Works! was my first stop. I went to the resume class to obtain a ticket for the Career Fair held at Alpena Community College. It was extremely helpful to me to have someone to critique my resume and offer suggestions after being out of the workforce for so long. After the career fair I received three interviews which is how I came to work for Allband Communications. I have now been here approximately a year and a half and still feel the endless possibilities of my career. Thanks for all of your help! – Laura Cramer
