All It Takes Is The Right Referral

A little assistance to get you off of assistance.

Unemployed and lacking self-confidence, Sara Cramton was having a hard time finding employment. She was referred to Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium’s AEP program through DHS for assistance and to help her work on her job readiness. Little did Sara realize then that when all hope was lost about gaining employment, it could quickly be turned around with the right referral!

Michigan Works! Case Manager/Trainer, Michelle Burns, began working with Sara to address her barriers to employment. Sara lacked appropriate job search skills and interview clothing. In addition, her name was changing and she did not have a social security card or a copy of her birth certificate. With the help of Michigan Works!, Sara was able to receive assistance in getting appropriate job search clothing, mileage assistance for job search activities, and local resources for alternative assistance, if she was ever in need.

Talent Specialist Keri Collins, facilitated the Work Keys testing with Sara so she could obtain her Career Ready Certificate and Michelle educated her on how to job search via Pure Michigan Talent Connect, how to apply to positions, and how to create a resume. Michigan Works! also referred Sara to positions that were hiring.

Thinking it would be a perfect fit for her needs, Michelle referred Sara to apply to the MI Call Center in Oscoda. It was a perfect fit! Sara was immediately hired on the spot and was excited to begin her new adventure, which gave her a great boost of confidence as well.

Hired on full-time at MI Call Center, Sara no longer needs public assistance through AEP/PATH. She learned that there is no barrier too big or too small that you cannot overcome; and that sometimes in life you may be surprised to find that the thing you’re worried about or not confident about is really not an issue at all…you just need a little assistance to get there.

“My experience with Michelle and all of Michigan Works! has been fantastic. Even with being 7 months pregnant and having many other barriers to employment, we were able to work together to overcome them. I found full-time employment in just a couple of weeks!” says Sara.
