A Road to Self-Sufficiency
Todd Herbin was referred to Michigan Works! from the Department of Human Services. He was working part time at the Salvation Army, but wasn’t receiving enough hours to be self-sufficient.
Todd attended orientation with Michigan Works! Case Manager/Trainer, Michelle Burns and met with Talent Specialist Keri Collins to facilitate the Work keys testing. In the program, he received resume assistance and was educated on the Pure Michigan Talent Connect website, regarding how to search for jobs and how to apply. He received the National Career Ready certificate soon after.
With only his part-time job, he found himself lacking sufficient funds to keep his vehicle insured. Michigan Works! assisted with the insurance costs to assure that he could continue to get to his job. After several job referrals, Todd received full-time employment as a Clerk with Meijers in March. In the first month of his new job, he continued to work both jobs to get a little ahead. He now works full-time at Meijers and is on the road to self-sufficiency!
“Thank you to Michigan Works! and My Talent for the help that they have gave me. I’ve been in the work force for 35 years mostly in the auto industry. At the age of 50 I had to reinvent myself to find a job in today’s market. Michigan Works! and My Talent have the tools and the Works staff have the experience to use the tools. They showed me how to apply to jobs and how to create a new resume to put out and I was lucky enough to have been called for full time employment! I am happy to say I now have a good job in retail could not have done it without Works and the staff, I would like to say a special thank you to Michelle Burns who has been so helpful. I believe that it would have been more difficult without her help and support. I recommend that you go to your nearest Michigan Works! office and see the staff and ask how you too can get this done, The next thing you know you too will be working and not looking. Once again I cannot thank you enough and I am glad you were there!,” writes Todd Herbin.
