Michigan Works! Helps Prepare Senior to Return to the Workforce
Karen Linker was retired, but due to financial reasons she needed to return to the workforce. She came to Michigan Works! for help in her job search.
Karen worked with MW! Talent Specialist Shelly Blankenship. Shelly helped Karen create her resume, fill out online applications, use the computer and fax machine, and navigate the AARP website. Karen was not experienced with how to apply for jobs since most, if not all, applications were online.
To get her job-ready, Karen took a temporary position at the United Way as a General Office Assistant. This will help prepare her for a permanent position.
Working with Michigan Works! and the United Way, Karen has gained self-confidence and is gaining knowledge and skills which will make her more employable. She’s been persistent and hasn’t caved in to her frustrations, even though learning new things has been a challenge.
”The Michigan Works! staff have always created a welcoming atmosphere, making for a calm working situation even when the office is very busy,” says Karen. “They are very knowledgeable and supportive and often offer words of encouragement.”
