Out of School Youth Gets Second Chance

Out of school youth, Alec Lanning came to Michigan Works! facing some barriers to employment; he was unemployed and a high school dropout.

Alec began working with Jessie Trumble in April of 2016. With Jessie’s support and guidance, Alec received GED tutoring, as well as assistance to pay his GED testing fees. In addition, Michigan Works! staff spoke to Garland Resort on Alec’s behalf regarding employment.

At the Gaylord Career Fair, Alec spoke with Garland Resort and they hired him. He worked there briefly, before moving on to Vogel Painting, and then finally gaining permanent employment with Beckman Services.

Alec reported that he’s grateful for the tutoring and support he received in getting his GED. He knew he had made bad choices in the past and really wanted to move forward and get past those choices. Because of these choices, he knew he’d face some difficulty gaining employment, so he really appreciated Jessie and Michigan Works! being there for him and supporting him in gaining employment.
