3 Jobs Lead to Self-Sufficiency
Due to back problems, Vickie Searcy lost her job and found herself (and her four year old) temporarily homeless. Vickie set out immediately to find work. She was referred to PATH and she began to work closely with Michigan Works! Case Manager Trainer, Lauren Morningstar. Vickie attended PATH class and workshops to improve her resume and interview skills, as well as learning time/stress management skills. She was also provided with supportive services to be able to afford transportation costs and appropriate clothing for work.
In under two months, Vickie was able to secure three part-time jobs (which equaled full-time employment, albeit without benefits). Vickie is currently employed as a demonstrator with Crossmark, as a customer service rep with Kmart, and as a custodial sub with Edu Staff in Cheboygan Schools. She also qualified for housing and has her own place.
Not having a stable home while caring for her young daughter was Vickie’s biggest challenge and motivator. She says thankfully, “Michigan Works is great. If it wasn’t for Michigan Works, I wouldn’t have found a job.”
